Federal Bureau Release Record Scope
The Federal Bureau of Prisons system is national. It is not a Worcester County jail, and a federal institution need not be located in Maryland to hold a person connected to Worcester County. BOP institutions and community placements handle sentenced federal custody. Federal pretrial detention and transport often involve the U.S. Marshals Service before a person is designated to BOP.
BOP's public locator covers federal inmates from 1982 forward and is genuinely retrospective. Many results remain available after physical departure. A “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” status without a current facility means the person is no longer held by BOP according to that federal result. The displayed release date belongs to BOP custody, not automatically to any state, local, immigration, or supervision record.
Search Federal Bureau Release Results
Use a federal number when possible because names can collide. The BOP Inmate Locator accepts register, DCDC, FBI, or INS numbers. Its name search uses first, middle, and last name with optional age, race, and sex filters. Search variants when punctuation, suffixes, aliases, or incomplete middle names may affect the match.
- Choose a number search when a register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number is known.
- Otherwise enter the full name and use only the optional filters supported by reliable identity information.
- Compare the returned name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location or status.
- Open any official explanation linked with the result and preserve the exact federal wording.
- Recheck the date when the record concerns a projection because federal sentence calculations can change.
- Use the federal judgment and responsible federal office when custody or supervision beyond BOP must be resolved.
The official locator search shows the number and name routes and the result columns.
The captured BOP page supports a federal search and should not be confused with a Worcester County inmate roster.
Note: A register number is the strongest public search key because it avoids many same-name errors in the federal locator.
Federal Bureau Release Result Fields
BOP results carry a compact set of public fields. Read them together. A release date with no current federal location can support departure from BOP, while the register number anchors the result to one federal identity. Optional biographical columns aid matching but should not be copied into unrelated public material.
| BOP field | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Name | The federal record name returned by the search |
| Register number | The unique BOP identifier used to disambiguate the result |
| Age, race, and sex | Public matching fields that can separate similar names |
| Release date | The BOP date shown for departure or projected departure, subject to current calculation |
| Location or status | The current facility or a term such as Released or Not in BOP Custody |
A displayed date can change while sentence computation remains active. BOP warns that First Step Act review and other recalculation can alter a release date. For a person still in custody, treat the date as current federal information rather than a guaranteed physical event. For a past result, pair the status with the date and the federal judgment.
Released From Federal Bureau Custody
“Released” and “Not in BOP Custody” are useful public terms, but they have a defined boundary. They establish that BOP does not report current control. They do not establish that every criminal sentence is over, that supervised release has ended, or that another authority did not take custody. Federal supervised release is a court-ordered community term administered through the federal probation system, separate from BOP physical custody.
A person can also move from BOP to another jurisdiction. If a state or local warrant, detainer, immigration matter, or other authority applies, the physical departure from BOP may be a transfer. The receiving system then controls current status. Ask for the destination only through official records and sources that can lawfully disclose it.
- Released
- A BOP status showing departure from federal Bureau custody.
- Not in BOP Custody
- A federal result that does not show present Bureau control.
- Supervised release
- A court-ordered federal community term distinct from incarceration and from BOP custody.
- Detainer
- A request or notice tied to another authority that may affect the next custody step.
Worcester County Federal Release Chain
A Worcester County arrest is not automatically a federal case. Municipal police, the Worcester County Sheriff, and Worcester County Jail operate in the state and local chain. A person becomes a federal detainee through federal authority, and the U.S. Marshals Service may manage pretrial detention or transport. Movement from Worcester County Jail to USMS is a transfer, not community release.
The U.S. Marshals Service prisoner page explains its federal detention and transport role, but USMS does not provide a general public historical released-person locator comparable to BOP's. Use the federal court docket for detention or release orders. After designation, use BOP for current or retained federal custody results.
| Stage | Controlling source |
|---|---|
| Local arrest and processing | Arresting agency record, Worcester County court, and county jail if committed |
| Federal pretrial detention | Federal court order and appropriate USMS confirmation |
| Federal sentence custody | BOP locator, institution, and federal judgment |
| BOP departure | Retained BOP result, release date, and federal records |
| Post-release term | Federal judgment and responsible probation office |
The Worcester County release search should be used when the person may still belong to the local or Maryland state path rather than the federal system.
Note: USMS pretrial control, BOP sentence custody, and federal supervised release are three separate stages with different records.
Federal Bureau Release Contact
The research establishes the BOP locator and its official details page as the public search channels. It does not supply a single national release-record telephone number, street address, or fixed service hours to publish here. Use the current institution shown in a live result or the official BOP route tied to the record. Do not invent a local Worcester BOP facility because none is identified by the research.
Federal Bureau of Prisons systemPublic search: BOP Inmate Locator
Preferred key: register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number
Retained status: Released or Not in BOP Custody when shown
Legal context: federal court judgment and federal probation records
The BOP locator details page supplies federal explanations and recalculation cautions. When a particular institution appears, use BOP's current official directory and institution contact rather than a stale third-party listing. For pretrial matters, use the federal court and appropriate USMS district route.
Federal Release Versus Other Custody
Maryland's current DOC locator, Maryland VINE, ICE's detainee locator, and BOP answer different questions. A BOP release result is stronger for a past federal departure than the Maryland DOC locator is for a past state discharge because BOP retains many released records. Yet the federal result remains limited to its own custodian.
If the person appears in ICE data, immigration custody or a recent ICE release is a separate event. If DPSCS shows current state placement, the person may have transferred to Maryland custody. If Worcester County Jail confirms current control, the BOP release did not end local custody. Never combine those records into one unlabeled “release date.”
Note: Label every federal, state, local, and immigration date with its source before comparing the order of custody events.
Verify Federal Release Records
The strongest public federal release check combines the register-number result, the displayed BOP status and date, and the federal court judgment. If a transfer is suspected, add the receiving custodian. If supervised release matters, read the judgment and later docket rather than treating the BOP locator as a supervision database.
Older federal records require special routing. BOP's searchable coverage generally begins in 1982; its official guidance routes earlier federal inmate records toward the National Archives. A no-result search can also stem from spelling, alias, incomplete coverage, or a person who was never committed to BOP. Federal pretrial USMS custody alone does not guarantee a later BOP record.
When two BOP results share a name, do not choose by release date alone. Compare the register number and the public matching fields with reliable federal court material. Keep private identifiers out of republication. If the judgment uses a different name form or suffix, preserve both exact versions in working notes so the source trail remains clear.
A retained BOP row is concise and may not state the release authority, destination, or terms that followed. The federal judgment and later docket can supply sentence and supervision context. The responsible record holder may be needed for a more detailed departure record. Ask for the smallest set of fields that resolves the federal custody question instead of seeking a complete institutional file.
Keep the inquiry purpose-neutral and focused. Record the search date, exact status, register number, release date, and any facility text displayed. Recheck an active projected date. For a completed event, seek the underlying federal record when the locator's short result does not answer authority, destination, or supervision.
